HVLS Fans: Comparing MacroAir Technologies and Big Ass Fans
If you are preparing for the upcoming dog days of summer, then it’s time to consider a high volume, low speed (HVLS) industrial ceiling fan. From the start, the options can be overwhelming, especially when trying to decide which brand of fan is best for your business. To help you, we’re comparing a few features of two of the top HVLS fan brands on the market, MacroAir Technologies® and Big Ass Fans®.
MacroAir Fans
MacroAir is located in San Bernardino, CA and is the company that coined the term and invented the category of HVLS ceiling fans. After releasing their first ten blade fan design, MacroAir continued innovating and has firmly led the HVLS fans category by embracing new technologies and listening to their customers along the way. In the years since their founding, MacroAir has continued to innovate the HVLS market, having been the first to introduce their NASA-designed 6ixBlade™ technology.
MacroAir continued to innovate and quickly introduced a brushless design without a gearbox! This fan is considerably lighter, more reliable, and easier to install. It is digitally controlled and has an incredible 50,000 hour warranty! And that is a full replacement warranty! Just to put 50,000 hours in perspective – if you ran your fan 5 days a week, 12 hours a day, the warranty would still be valid in the 16th year of operation! 16 years!
Big Ass Fans
Big Ass Fans is located in Lexington, KY and was MacroAir’s first distributor. Since then, Big Ass Fans has carved out their own place in the industry and developed an assortment of HVLS fans with features similar to MacroAir’s models. Today, many of their products continue to utilize technology similar to the original MacroAir designs and technologies of the past.
At first glance, it’s hard to know what to look for and what the differences are. But digging a little deeper, there are some key technical differences between these two brands that you should be aware of before making any purchasing decisions.

In 2012, MacroAir decided to put their product to the test in the heat of summer by doing a head-to-head comparison between a 24ft 6ixBlade™ MacroAir AirSpan HVLS fan and a 24ft, 10 blade Big Ass Fans Powerfoil® X2.0. It’s safe to say that MacroAir was the clear leader, but don’t just take our word for it. Listen to the numbers.
With only six blades as opposed to ten, a fan like the AirSpan weighs 12% less than the Powerfoil X2.0 at 236lbs. A lighter fan and fewer blades means less stress on the motor and other parts of the fan leading to a longer life for the product.
In addition to these crucial performance features, MacroAir continues to innovate the products. MacroAir has managed to drive out much of the bulk and weight of their older models.
At NuEra, we saw the value of high volume, low speed fans early on and knew they would be a perfect fit for our customers. After two years of evaluating various fans from the major brands, we decided MacroAir was the only partner for us. We chose MacroAir because, quite simply, we believe in our experience that their fans move more air, more efficiently leaving greater savings for your facility and greater comfort for your team.

Why should I choose a 6ixBlade fan?
- MacroAir 6ixBlade fans run faster than outdated ten-blade units. Because the fan is moving faster, it’s more efficient. And a more efficient fan lives longer. As RPM goes up, torque goes down for the same horsepower. Because 6ixBlade fans run slightly faster than ten-blade fans, the torque is lower. Torque is what hurst motors, bearings and gear reducers – so – less torque translates to more life.
- Six blades means less materials and a lighter fan. Because MacroAir fans are lighter in weight, they put less stress on your building, have lower frieght costs and are easier to install.
- MacroAir 6ixBlade fans have a much lower carbon footprint. The electrolysis process used to produce aluminum requires large quantities of electrical power. When the cost of producing one ton of primary aluminum is broken down, almost one third is devoted to electrical power. Because MacroAir 6ixBlade HVLS fans utilize 40% fewer blades and aluminum, the electrical power required to produce the product is 1/3 of 40% or 13% lower than 10-blad units. MacroAir industrial fans are “green” before they are installed.
- Our 6ixBlade fans also reduce fire sprinkler obstruction potential and represent the low end of the solidarity ratio range.
- MacroAir 6ixBlade industrial fans are lighter to ship and easier to install. Lighter fans mean you benefit with reduced shipping costs, with up to 46% reduction in weight over the competition’s 10-blade fan units.
- Everything on the fan is smaller in size – this lends them to be much easier to install. Even the power unit can be lifted by one man. This means it takes two people approximately four to six hours to install one fan.
- MacroAir 6ixBlade fans reduce loads. Because a MacroAir fan weighs less than a standard 10-blade fan it reduces the load on the attaching points, reducing stress on the building. Load is spread by guy wires; “universal joint” style mount pivots 360 degrees to connect preventing any unneeded stress.
- Accel/Decel ramps limit load transmitted to mounting system and building. The lower running rotor torque reduces stress on the building. The lower solidarity ratio reduces load in high wind situations.
Why does MacroAir anodize their fan blades?
To prevent corrosion and extend the life of the fan.
Why is MacroAir the only company that allows the fans to be used in reverse?
Because there is more than one reason to use an HVLS fan. In the winter the fan can be used in “reverse” to draw warm air from high ceiling areas to the floor.
What does the purchase of one fan include?
Our complete HVLS fan includes the fan, blades, motor control panel, 25 feet of motor control cable, 100 feet of remote cable and the remote.
How much does it cost to ship one fan?
How long is a piece of string? Not an easy question to answer in general – we work very hard to keep our shipping costs as low as possible (and we frequently have free shipping specials!) – MacroAir fans are designed to use 40% fewer materials – making them lighter to ship. Yea – we dodge the specific question a bit here – but we’ll be happy to quote you exact shipping costs if you give us a call.
How long and how many people does it take to install one fan?
Ideally, you should have two people to install the fan and usually four to six hours to install. We’ll be happy to quote installation of your fans – just call us.
What is NFPA and why is compliance a big deal?
NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association – (Click here to visit their site)
Many insurance companies and fire marshalls prefer HVLS fans that are compliant with NFPA guidelines. All MacroAir fans meet NFPA specifications.
What is LEED?
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system. (Click here to visit their site)
The program provides thrid-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and mainenance solutions.
MacroAir HVLS fans can help achieve LEED certification through lowering your energy consumption, creating a healthy indoor environment and air quality, as well as using less resources and equipment through HVAC systems.
